Matt Roan joined the Eastern Kentucky University Department of Athletics in June 2015 as the Deputy Director of Athletics. He worked the previous two years at EKU as the Special Assistant to the President.
“I am very pleased to have the opportunity to bring Matt Roan on as a member of my athletic leadership staff,” EKU Director of Athletics Steve Lochmueller said. “His experience in working for President Benson and knowledge of overall University operations and intercollegiate athletics brings tremendous value to our department as we move forward.”
In Roan’s current role at EKU, he will focus on external operations, legal and other administrative matters, as well as sports administration.
Roan had previously served as Southern Utah University’s Deputy Director of Athletics in 2013. In that capacity, he assisted the Director of Athletics in strategic planning and operations for the entire SUU Athletics department. Roan was responsible for the implementation and management of the revenue generation component of SUU Athletics, including development, marketing and promotions, Thunderbird Sports Properties, ticketing and business affairs.
Roan earned a juris doctorate degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 2012 after graduating summa cum laude in political science in 2007 and starring in football at Southern Utah. The Virginia native transferred to SUU from Virginia Tech, where he also played football.
Roan, who received All-Great West Football Conference honors in each of his three seasons at Southern Utah as well as various academic honors, participated in the Minnesota Vikings’ camp as a rookie free agent in 2008.
While at the UK law school, Roan served as an administrative intern with the Wildcat football program and as a tutor/mentor for student-athletes.
He returned to Southern Utah in 2012 as a President’s Council Fellow. Roan has also worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Dayton School of Law, as a law clerk for a general practice law firm and county attorney in Virginia, and as an assistant football coach at Hargrave Military Academy.
